VENZA supports over 2000 hotels globally, keeping guests and their data safe from breaches with 360-degree visibility for proactive management of risks. This allows property managers to focus on guest service and building trust in their brand.

Challenge

VENZA is animated by the principle that better visibility means better defense. Effective risk management thus requires a wholistic view of data across properties, departments, and units to pinpoint and address vulnerabilities. The hospitality industry is characterized by a multi-layered relationship structure between owners, operators, management companies, brands, and employees. Each party may have partial identity and access management permissions, making the task of collective data collection and reporting complex. For example, a manager at a property may seek compliance training data by employee group type. In contrast, the owner of the property may require comprehensive data.

Based on extensive discussions with clients, VENZA determined that it required a system capable of producing additional data granularity and customization. The new solution needed to integrate with the VENZA PEAK™ Learning Management System to provide a consistent user experience. Modernizing its reporting solution also offered an opportunity to update its technology stack and leverage the cloud’s application development practices and capabilities.

VENZA chose DataArt to design and build the new solution because of their previous working relationship, and DataArt’s expertise in travel and hospitality and experience in building similar systems.

Solution

After working with VENZA to clearly define the project's goals, the DataArt team evaluated possible options for implementation. The joint team decided that Amazon Web Services, specifically AWS Cognito, would offer a managed, secure, and extendable foundation for identity and access management of the new solution.

DataArt helped the client visualize the result of what this system would look like before its pieces were implemented. VENZA and DataArt developed the new platform as an independent module providing User Management, Dashboards, and Reports functionality based on data consumed from VENZA PEAK™. This single-page application with a Node.js backend delivers a modern user experience for viewing dashboards, running custom reports, and managing user access.

Highlights of the Solution

Granular roles and permissions: up to six levels for user groups and an unlimited number of roles to customize permissions for system and data access, addressing the complexity of relationships in the hospitality industry between the hotel, management company and ownership group.
Expanded functionality to address customer requests: bulk importing and exporting users, using an external Identity Provider, filtering for easier user management.
Modernized technology stack with AWS Lambda, Node.js, and React, managed customer identity and access management with AWS Cognito, and infrastructure as a code.
Improved security on multiple layers, which was validated by an independent third-party audit.

The result is the VENZA Risk Dashboard & Reporting™ product. A single pane of glass that updates dynamically, VENZA’s clients will now have access to a unified and seamless instrument capable of customized reporting.

The platform will serve as a node that combines inputs from key products like VENZA PEAK™, VENZA Phishing™, and the Spot Check Awareness Auditor™. It will generate a real-time score for each and be viewable at the organization, property, group, or individual level. Each independent score will also contribute to a risk climate measurement that provides an overall score. Data will be easily accessible to clients through the dashboard and user-generated executive summaries.

This will greatly improve clients’ capability to monitor, assess, and improve their data protection policies and track compliance with PCI DSS standards and privacy regulations.
